Relationship Patterns
Understand withdrawal, pursuit, stonewalling, anxiety, and recurring conflict cycles.
Start with the pattern, not the stereotype
Relationship cycles often become self-reinforcing: one person pursues harder, the other withdraws further, and both experience the other's reaction as proof of the original fear.
A more useful way to respond
Naming the cycle can help both people respond to the pattern rather than treating each other as the entire problem.
Questions worth asking
- What specific behavior changed, and when?
- What do I know directly versus what am I assuming?
- Have we clearly discussed what each of us needs?
- Is this a one-time reaction or a repeated pattern?
- Do the next actions match the explanation being given?
Safety note: General relationship guidance is not a substitute for professional support. If a relationship involves threats, coercion, stalking, violence, or immediate danger, prioritize appropriate local safety resources rather than trying to solve the situation through better communication alone.
